Choose a Random Number in PowerPoint

| | Comments

This may seem difficult to achieve in PowerPoint without vba code. However, there are ways to avoid using vba or macros, which may be useful if you are using a free viewer or using Open Office or the security level may not be sufficient to run the macros.

The solution is to use a spinner, akin to those we see in the gameshow "Wheel of Fortune". One limitation of this is that it is not 100% random (unless we make it fast enough, so that there is little chance of using skill to time the result). Another shortfall is that there will be limited choices of numbers/words, whereas in a real random generator, we can have theoretically unlimited options.

Nevertheless, it is still a useful tool in classes or parties, where you can even have your own game of "Wheel of Fortune"!

BMI Calculation - Excel application

| | Comments

The Body Mass Index(BMI) formula was developed by Belgium statistician Adolphe Quelet(1796-1874), and was known as the Quetelet Index where the definition of Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women as defined in National Hearth Lung and Blood Institute in USA.

You can visit their site for more information.

Using this simple Microsoft Office Excel application, it allows you to find out your BMI and BMI status with ease.

**In this "BMI Calculator", a few Excel strategies were used. For example, "Data Validation" were used to for the dropdowns and to limit the choices. Also conditional formattings were used to highlight the relevant cells. Formulas were nested to use "IF...ELSE" given the different conditions - male/female, BMI values etc. Microsoft Excel is a suitable tool to create applications like this. This Excel file had security measures, such as locking cells, protecting worksheet, to ensure that the user does not click and delete the wrong cells.

Excel ISBN and UIN Checker (with algorithm provided!)

| | Comments

There is often a need to use the check digit often to detect any errors such as from data entry. For example, one might need to check if the digits and letter in a UIN were legitimate or valid before registering the person in a course or before granting access for further online transactions.

"A check digit is a form of redundancy check used for error detection, the decimal equivalent of a binary checksum. It consists of a single digit computed from the other digits in the message.

With a check digit, one can detect simple errors in the input of a series of digits, such as a single mistyped digit, or the permutation of two successive digits."

There are various uses of the check digit. In this post, we are using the "Modulo 11" checksum algorithm to find the check digit for ISBN and UIN (for Singapore and Hong Kong).

Why do we use the "modulo 11"? For numerical check digit, using modulo 11 allows checksum to be written as single digit.

In Singapore, the National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) number is the Unique Identification Number (UIN) or Foreigner Identification Number (FIN)

The algorithm for UIN is not officially announced but is common knowledge among those in the industry.

When used appropriately, this could be a useful first-level protection against malicious attacks or to prevent frivolous usage of certain services your company provide.

Sudoku Excel Solver

| | Comments

Sudoku is a logic-based puzzle. The most common variant is the 9×9 grid with 3×3 regions.

The objective is to fill this 9×9 grid so that each column, each row, as well as each of the nine 3×3 boxes contains the digits from 1 to 9 only one time each (per row/column/3x3 region), but not including the diagonals.

The puzzle provides a partially completed grid - this provides the constraint on the contents of individual regions and hence each Sudoku has an unique solution that can be reached logically without guessing.

Sudoku is a deceptively simple game of logic, but it is acutally a challenge to master.

You will be able to find various programmes on the internet that can help you solve the Sudoku puzzles.

Right here we are introducing a free Microsoft Excel file that will enable you to solve most Sudoku puzzles with ease.

Just enter the given numbers in their correct places and click the "Start Solving" button in the Excel file. Note that you would have to enable the macro before you can click the button.

If you have a better variant of a Sudoku Solver using MS Excel (or others), do feel free to introduce us by making a comment here.

Social Networking Media– Verdict?

| Comments

Just a little sidetrack from the usual postings...

Facebook 'enhances intelligence' but Twitter and Youtube 'diminishes it', claims psychologist Dr Tracy Alloway from the results of her study.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/twitter/6147668/Facebook-enhances-intelligence-but-Twitter-diminishes-it-claims-psychologist.html

“Sudoku also stretched the working memory, as did keeping up with friends on Facebook, she said.

But the ''instant'' nature of texting, Twitter and YouTube was not healthy for working memory."

Interestingly, I found her on twitter, perhaps as part of her study as she has likely joined in Feb this year.

In a speech today, US President Barack Obama praised twitter, google and facebook but not Microsoft’s Xbox. He had a blunt status update for America's permanently wired youth: your Facebook postings could come back to haunt you.

Rolling credits slide template

| | Comments

Use this rolling credits slide template, you can easily use it at the end of a group presentation, play, or video to give it a professional feel and look!

Limitation: This will work for PowerPoint 2002, 2003 and 2007.

You might need to edit the timing of the animations if you have a longer credit list of cast and crew.

What you need to do is to add more 'Credit textboxes' and also incrementally increase the delay by 7.5 sec for each additional 'Credit textbox' added. Enough said, you can explore more of it by downloading it!
